From June 15 through July 15, I will be publishing a special series of posts that concern the 150^th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg and its effects on the Pennsylvania home front. As an invading army pressed north across the Potomac from Maryland, the diverse people of the Keystone State faced the Union’s most perilous hour.

The stories created in June and July 1863 are vital to understanding the local history of Central Pennsylvania but also provide context for the larger war effort. Together, we will examine the stories of people from all walks of life. Politicians, generals, businessmen, the average farmer, and people from all walks of life reacted very differently to the threat they faced. Some ran from the invading rebels, others picked up picks and shovels and helped build defenses. Others picked up rifles and muskets to defend home and family. By utilizing the historical record, including diaries, maps, newspapers, contemporary writings, photographs, and other documents, these stories come back to us today.

This month provides so many amazing tales that it is hard to bring them all to the reader. What I am attempting to do is to weave many of these stories into a cohesive narrative that will help to bring these perilous weeks to life, over a century and a half after they occurred.

I will also be examining events occurring within the Lykens Valley area to show the effects that two years of war had on small Pennsylvania communities.

1863 would prove to be an important year. This was true not only on the national scale, but also at the local level in towns like Gratz or Lykens, Hegins or Tremont. As you will find in reading these upcoming posts, the national, state, and local stories all come together in June and July of that year and provide a story that differs greatly from the military story alone.

I hope to bring these stories back to prominence and tell not only of the great military struggle that occurred during July 1863, but of the many other fascinating events that occurred that seem to have been overshadowed.

So I hope as we commemorate the 150th anniversary of the battle of Gettysburg, you will join myself and the Gratz Historical Society in this special project.

Veterans of the Civil War identified as having some connection to the Lykens Valley area and included in the Civil War Research Project was last updated 19 April 2012.  In a series of posts continuing intermittently until concluding in mid-June, a brief sketch of each of the new names added since then will be presented.  Note that in a few cases, the persons are not veterans, but have been identified with some Civil War event or are related to a Civil War veteran.  At the conclusion of the listing of these added names, the Veterans list will be updated with the new names, re-alphabetized, and presented in a new format which includes the Project File Number for each individual.

Additional information is sought on each of the individuals in the Veterans’ List.  Comments can be added to the blog post or information can be sent by e-mail.  Of particular interest are stories, pictures, military records, pension information, and genealogies.

[CW#T026] William Thompson (1840-1862) ——- 96th Pennsylvania Infantry, Company G, Private (MI 23 Sep 1861 – Died 18 Dec 1862).  Died of disease at Frederick, Maryland, 18 Dec 1862.  Buried:  Antietam National Cemetery, Antietam, MD (Section 26, Lot E, Grave 480).   Named on Lykens G.A.R. Monument as a Civil War vet who died of disease – Private.  Possibly the one named on the Tower City Veterans’ Memorial.  Possibly the one for whom the Pottsville G.A.R. Post was named.   AKA: William W. Thompson.

Nickname was “Old Spudge.”  Buried:  North Cedar Hill Cemetery, Philadelphia.      In cast of “Our American Cousin,” night of Lincoln Assassination.  Died at Edwin Forrest Home in Philadelphia.  Permission to remove trunks from Ford’s Theatre.  Was in asylum for the Insane, 1860; unknown how he got out.

Veterans of the Civil War identified as having some connection to the Lykens Valley area and included in the Civil War Research Project was last updated 19 April 2012.  In a series of posts continuing intermittently until concluding in mid-June, a brief sketch of each of the new names added since then will be presented.  Note that in a few cases, the persons are not veterans, but have been identified with some Civil War event or are related to a Civil War veteran.  At the conclusion of the listing of these added names, the Veterans list will be updated with the new names, re-alphabetized, and presented in a new format which includes the Project File Number for each individual.

Additional information is sought on each of the individuals in the Veterans’ List.  Comments can be added to the blog post or information can be sent by e-mail.  Of particular interest are stories, pictures, military records, pension information, and genealogies.

Today’s blog post provides information on Volume 3 of a series of books published beginning in 1995 by Closson Press, titled Schuylkill County Pennsylvania Archives.  In all, three volumes were published through 1996.  The series was based on genealogical research done by: Phillip A. Rice, a specialist in church and cemetery records; Jean A. Dellock, a specialist in courthouse and census records; and Dr. Glenn P. Schwalm, a noted researcher and authority on early German-American records.  The records included in the series were edited and compiled mainly by Rice and Dellock, with written permission from Dr. Schwalm where his material was included.  Each volume contains a variety of items including cemetery lists, mining reports, and church records.  Each volume also contains a significant amount of material related to the study of Civil War veterans and military regiments and companies from Schuylkill County.  There is a surname index that is included for each volume.

The three volumes are available for sale by Closson Press:  Volume 1;  Volume 2; Volume 3.
