82nd Pennsylvania Infantry – Pennsylvania Memorial at Gettysburg

(Part 63 of an ongoing series on the Battle of Gettysburg). Around the base of the Pennsylvania Memorial at Gettysburg are a series of plaques which, by regiment and company, note the names of every soldier who was present at the Battle of Gettysburg. This post will present the plaque recognizing the men who served in the 82nd Pennsylvania Infantry. By clicking on the plaque it should enlarge so the names can be more clearly read. Following the plaque is a list of the men who have thus far been identified as eligible for inclusion in this Civil War Research Project who, it is believed, served for a time in the 82nd Pennsylvania Infantry . Not all the names may appear on the Pennsylvania Memorial plaques. If a name does not appear, it could be that the soldier did serve in the 82nd Pennsylvania Infantry, but was not part of the regiment during its days at Gettysburg – or it could mean that the soldier was erroneous included in the 82nd Pennsylvania Infantry list. There could also be errors on the plaque. Readers are invited to submit comments about any names appearing below, or on the plaque, especially if they believe the soldier was from the Lykens Valley area and should be included in this study.

Note: At the present time, no veterans from the Lykens Valley area have been identified in this regiment. Since research is still being conducted to determine the Civil War regiments in which many of the Lykens Valley area veterans served, it is possible that some names will be added in the future. Research is on-going and corrections and additions are always welcome. Information for this post was taken from the files of the Civil War Research Project. A separate digital file is kept on each soldier who is included in the list of veterans. Information is sought on any men from the Lykens Valley area who were soldiers or sailors during the Civil War.
Thanks so much for including this photograph so that we can see the list of names clearly. I am particularly interested in L H Shuster (company F). He is listed here as a private but he later became a corporal and died at Cold Harbor June 1, 1864. An article in the Philadelphia Inquirer from April 1865 describes the shocking state of the battlefield and the author mentions finding a headboard on the ground, inscribed Lawrence Shuster 82nd Pennsylvania. The author probably knew that this regiment was recruited in Philadelphia which is probably why he singled out this example. I have not been able to find a record of Shuster’s burial in any records. Most likely the headboard was separated from the grave and he became an “unknown.” But I am curious to find out more about him and his war record. There were a lot of Shusters in Philadelphia and even a few Lawrence Shusters but so far I have not been able to match them up.

Bureau of Pensions states that my great grandfather, Charles Bowman, was a private Co.I, 82 Regiment Pennsylvania Infantry. How do I further research since his name is NOT on the 82nd Regiment plaque ? Thank you
My Gr.-Gr Grandfather was Captain William Kopp [ Co. B ]82nd Pa. Vol. It always states that some of the officers were officers in England and France. Capt. Kopp was an officer in Germany before coming to America.I remember seeing a very early machine copy of a letter stating he had been an officer in Germany that I think was written by one of his children. at one time I possessed a letter,in German, that was written after the end of the Civil War. Also had the two tassels from his cummerbund,which still exist and are in possession of a cousin.
