Posted By on August 7, 2015

Today’s post is the sixth in the series of photographs of the Civil War veteran graves at Oak Hill Cemetery, Millersburg, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.  It features the grave markers of eleven soldiers about whom research is ongoing.  To determine the extent to which each soldier’s information has been posted on this blog, click on the name and a list of prior posts that contain information will come up.  For veterans where there is very little information available, reader comments are invited.

  1. Steve says:

    Milton P. Hawley
    Born in New York c1836
Enlisted in Company M 1st Pennsylvania Cavalry Regiment on 05 Aug. 1861.
His enlistment rank is listed as private with last rank as saddler. He then was in Company I 2nd Pennsylvania Provisional Cavalry as a saddler and was discharged at that rank.
The 1880 census lists his occupation as peanut vendor.
His widow, Sophia, filed and was granted a widow’s pension in 1889.

    Thaddeus S. Freeland
Enlisted on 01 Oct. 1862, more information on his military service can be found on his findagrave page:
    http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=89110076&ref=acom
The 1850 census lists his parents as James (born c1813) and Hannah, so his father may be the same person as the Col. James Freeland in the cemetery.
Both he and his brother George were charter members of the Kilpatrick G.A.R

    David Beitel
    Enlisted 02 Oct. 1861 into E Co. 93rd Pennsylvania Infantry as a Private. Mustered out 27 June 1865 as a 1st Lt.
Filed for a pension on 01 June 1877

    Nelson Meck
Enlisted 07 Mar. 1865 as a Private into K Co. 83rd Pennsylvania Infantry. Mustered out 28 June 1865

    William Lehman
Enlisted 03 Mar. 1865 as a Private into K Co. 83rd Pennsylvania Infantry. Mustered out 28 June 1865
His wife Susan, filed for a widow’s pension on 12 July 1890.

    Peter Bowen
Enlisted 04 Mar. 1865 into D Co. 74th Pennsylvania Infantry at the rank of private but apparently was quickly promoted to corporal. Promoted to Full Sergeant on 05 July 1865. Mustered out on 29 Aug. 1865 at Clarksburg, West Virginia
Filed for a pension on 02 Mar. 1883, which was granted.
He was living in Millersburg in the 1870 census but had moved to Sunbury, Northumberland, PA by the 1880 census (which lists his occupation as carpenter)
The 1920 census lists his occupation as an assistant borough regulator
He died in Sunbury on 12 May 1922
His wife, Margaret, filed for a widow’s pension on 26 May 1922.
It’s possible that he may be the same Peter Bowen who enlisted as a private into G Co. 26th Pennsylvania Infantry on 18 Sept. 1862 and was mustered out on 04 Mar. 1864.
That could explain his rapid rise in rank in the 74th.
But a pension was filed for this Peter Bowen on 06 July 1891.
Interestingly the pension index file card (found on Fold3) lists this Peter Bowen’s date of death as 30 May 1922 and I can’t find any death or census records for him Pennsylvania (although he could be living out of state)
I would recommend anybody interested in the life of the 74th PA Peter Bowen to also examine the pension file of the 26th PA Peter Bowen to try and find out if he was pulling some type of scam in receiving two pensions at the same time

    John Slotterback
Enlisted for 3 months in 1861 in E Co. 6th Pennsylvania as a private and mustering out as a corporal.
Enlisted again on 19 Aug. 1861 into E Co. 55th Pennsylvania Infantry. Commissioned as a 2nd Lt. on 27 Sept. 1861, promoted to 1st Lt. on 01 Dec 1862. Mustered out on 16 Aug. 1864.
He filed for a pension on 28 June 1880.
His widow Mary filed for a pension on 04 Nov. 1884.
He appears to be the same John Slotterback living in Baltimore in the 1880 census as a retail grocer.
