102nd Pennsylvania Infantry – Pennsylvania Memorial at Gettysburg

Posted By on April 15, 2011

(Part  19 of an ongoing series on the Battle of Gettysburg).  Around the base of the Pennsylvania Memorial at Gettysburg are a series of plaques which, by regiment and company, note the names of every soldier who was present at the Battle of Gettysburg.  This post will present the plaque recognizing the men who served in the 102nd Pennsylvania Infantry.  By clicking on the plaque it should enlarge so the names can be more clearly read.  Following the plaque is a list of the men who have thus far been identified as eligible for inclusion in this Civil War Research Project who, it is believed, served for a time in the 102nd Pennsylvania Infantry.  Not all the names may appear on the Pennsylvania Memorial plaques.  If a name does not appear, it could be that the soldier did serve in the 102nd Pennsylvania Infantry, but was not part of the regiment during its days at Gettysburg – or it could mean that the soldier was erroneous included in the 102nd Pennsylvania Infantry list.  There could also be errors on the plaque.  Readers are invited to submit comments about any names appearing below, or on the plaque, especially if they believe the soldier was from the Lykens Valley area and should be included in this study.

Information for this post was taken from the files of the Civil War Research Project.  A separate digital file is kept on each of the above-named men.  Information is sought on any men from the Lykens Valley area who were soldiers or sailors during the Civil War.

My Great Great Grandfather William West b. 1845 in Pittsburgh was mustered in 1861 in the 102nd no less! He was in the Infantry in Company M. He enlisted Oct 1861 and marched to defend Washington DC, and was in many other battles. He was discharged in Oct 1864, so he served 3 years at age 17, 18, and 19 years old! I found record of this in 1890 Veterans Schedule in Olean, Cattaraugus County NY where he died in 1898. I would like to submit this information to your site and would be extremely grateful to converse on line via email about information you may have about his Regiment, the 102nd, Company M, Infantry he was a private. Please correspond back to me, I’d really like to talk to someone there about more research. David Jackson

      James,

I am in the process of purchasing a home in McCandless, Pa, and there are two gravestones on the property, both civil war veterans, one of which is William M. Whittaker. I am curious if you are aware of the location of this gravestone, or if you happen to know any details of why it is there. It is just in a back yard of the home, built in 1950. The death date on the gravestone is 4/26/26.

        Will,
I can’t believe that I found your post while researching my ancestor/Civil War veteran William M. Whitaker! I wonder if you would be willing to send me a picture of the gravestone and maybe a rubbing? Also, can you tell me what name is on the other gravestone? Thank you!

My great, great, great grandfather Thomas Jonh McLowry was w/ the 102nd Company A. I have copies of 2 casualty reports and prisoner exchange record. He was wounded at Fair Oaks and Malvern Hill. He was furloughed for 2 months and reported back for duty on July 1, 1863, Just in time for Gettysburg. He was a private but was a corporal by Battle of Fair Oaks. I also have some of his muster roles.
